Nice from Cannes — Port Day Guide

Baie des Anges boulevards, Cours Saleya markets and Niçoise street life — the Riviera's urban heart west of Cannes.

Nice is the French Riviera's largest city — a blend of Italianate Old Town lanes, Belle Époque promenade architecture and a beach culture that feels distinctly Niçoise. From Gare Maritime at Quai Laubeuf, Nice is 35–45 minutes west by road, close enough for a full day without the longer haul east to Monaco.

Promenade des Anglais curves seven kilometres along the Baie des Anges — blue chairs, pebble beaches and the kind of Mediterranean light that inspired Matisse and Chagall, both of whom lived and worked here. The Old Town (Vieux Nice) behind Cours Saleya offers baroque churches, narrow alleys and socca stalls.

Cours Saleya market runs Tuesday through Sunday mornings — flowers, produce and Niçoise specialities in one of France's great market squares. On non-market days the square still hums with café terraces. Castle Hill (Colline du Château) provides the best elevated view if your timing allows the climb.

Nice suits passengers who prefer urban energy over Monaco's principality formality. It anchors our French Riviera Highlights and Nice & Eze excursions — the latter adding hill village time without the Monaco transfer.

Making the most of Nice on a port day

Focus on a manageable triangle: Cours Saleya and Old Town in the morning, Promenade des Anglais along the coast, and Castle Hill if energy permits. Attempting museums, Matisse Chapel and Villefranche-sur-Mer on the same day overreaches a standard port window.

Return from Nice to Gare Maritime takes 35–50 minutes by road depending on traffic. Build 60 minutes buffer before all-aboard. Morning market visits require an early departure from the ship — worth it on market days.

Highlights

  • Promenade des Anglais and Baie des Anges views
  • Cours Saleya market — Tue–Sun mornings
  • Vieux Nice Old Town lanes and baroque churches
  • Castle Hill panoramic viewpoint
  • Matisse and Chagall artistic legacy
  • 35–45 minutes from Cannes cruise terminal

Practical tips

  • Prioritise Cours Saleya on market mornings — arrive before 11:00
  • Try socca — Nice's chickpea pancake — from a market stall
  • Old Town lanes are shaded; the promenade is exposed — plan accordingly
  • Combine with Eze via Nice & Eze excursion for city plus village
  • Allow 60 minutes return buffer — Nice traffic builds in late afternoon

Nice from Cannes — Port Day Guide — FAQs

How far is Nice from the Cannes cruise port?

Approximately 33 km and 35–45 minutes by road. TER train from Cannes takes 30–35 minutes, plus terminal-to-station time.

Nice or Monaco — which should I choose from Cannes?

Monaco for principality glamour and our Editor's Choice Monaco Magic route. Nice for urban culture, markets and a less formal atmosphere. Both need a full day — you cannot do both.

Can I walk Nice comfortably on a port day?

Yes — the Old Town, Cours Saleya and central promenade are compact and walkable. Castle Hill involves a climb. An organised tour handles transfer and timing; self-guiding works if you accept schedule management.
